Good Ol' Aunt Flow

On today’s show, I chat with the period girl, Nicole Jardim. Nicole Jardim is a Certified Women’s Health Coach and creator of Fix Your Period, a series of programs that empower young women to reclaim their hormonal health in a fun and sassy way. She runs a successful group coaching business and has helped thousands of women around the world who are struggling with PCOS, infertility, amenorrhea, PMS and much more. Nicole’s one smart cookie! In the show, she explains the ins and outs of sugar imbalance and why that’s the #1 cause of your period blues. If you’ve ever experienced brain fog, fatigue, crazy mood swings, and midnight snack cravings then you might be dealing with a sugar imbalance.

Nicole talks about how sugar imbalances are linked to common issues like PMS, PCOS, and thyroid issues. She gives you practical and helpful ways to balance your hormones so that you’re not keeling over with cramps and craving sugar like mad!

Here are Nicole’s top 4 tips to help fix your period:

  1. Monitor your blood sugar - Nicole recommends getting a glucometer so you can monitor your blood sugar before and after you eat. Fasting blood sugar levels should be 75-85 mg/dl. She recommends checking your levels 15,30,45, and 60 minutes after eating. Your blood sugar shouldn't spike up more than 25 points at any of those timed intervals.

  2. Diet - It’s time to ditch the donuts and coffee combo for breakfast. Your meals should be balanced with healthy servings of fruits, vegetables, healthy fat, and protein.

  3. Reduce caffeine - Don't drink it! It can make your anxiety worse, increase prostaglandins (hormone-like substance found in all your tissues responsible for contraction and relaxation of smooth muscles and blood vessels and modulates inflammation). This can cause uterine muscles to contract, increase breast tenderness, trigger headaches, migraines, joint pain during the premenstrual period. Also causes blood sugar imbalance and causes stress hormones to be out of whack.

  4. Get a grip sista! - Stress needs to be controlled and takes a mindset shift. Adrenal glands release cortisol, a stress hormone, which counters insulins and releases glucose in bloodstream. Cortisol can be damaging over time. So the simple act of thinking about stress in positive way can make a huge difference for your body.

She passionately believes that the fundamentals to healing any hormonal imbalance lie in an approach that addresses the unique physiology of every woman.
