FART VS SHART?

Ever thought it was just a fart… and ended up with a messy surprise? 😬 You’re not alone. The body has a clever way of figuring out whether what’s knocking at your backdoor is gas, liquid, or solid—and it all comes down to your pelvic floor and rectal reflexes.

Here’s how it works:

Your rectum stores poop and has stretch-sensitive nerve endings that send messages to your brain. When the rectum senses something, a tiny sample gets pushed into the anal canal. Then, your brain decides—fart, poop, or… uh-oh. If it’s not a good time, your external anal sphincter kicks in to hold it back.

But sometimes, that smart system misfires—and you shart. If that happens often, or if you notice leaks, it’s time to see a pelvic floor therapist. It’s not just about muscles—it’s about coordination, reflexes, and support.
