If you’ve searched online for ways to make your penis bigger, you’ve probably come across jelqing, penis pumps, and penile traction devices. These methods are often promoted as simple ways to increase penis length or girth, but the claims don’t always match the evidence.
I’m Dr. Susie Gronski, a pelvic health physical therapist and sexuality counselor. In this blog, I’ll break down what we know about these popular penis enlargement methods, what they may actually help with, and the potential risks you should understand before trying them.
What Are the Most Popular Penis Enlargement Methods?
Three methods frequently promoted online are jelqing, vacuum erection devices, and penile traction devices.
Jelqing: A manual technique involving repeated squeezing and stretching of an erect penis.
Penis pumps: Devices that use vacuum pressure to draw blood into the penis and support erections.
Penile traction devices: Devices that apply controlled stretching force to the penis over time.
A device that helps with erectile function or a medical condition doesn’t necessarily increase penis size permanently.
1. Jelqing: Does It Actually Make Your Penis Bigger?
Jelqing is a manual technique that involves holding the base of a partially or fully erect penis with one hand while the other hand milks or stretches the penis using the thumb and index finger in an “OK” position around the shaft.
The idea behind jelqing is that repeatedly pushing blood toward the head of the penis will stimulate tissue growth and increase length or girth.
However, there’s no reliable scientific evidence showing that jelqing safely produces permanent penis enlargement.
Why the Muscle-Building Theory Doesn’t Hold Up
Jelqing is sometimes compared to weightlifting. The theory suggests that applying repeated pressure to the penis will cause it to grow in the same way that resistance training can increase the size of skeletal muscles.
But the penis isn’t built like your biceps.
Penile erectile tissue contains specialized vascular spaces and smooth muscle that allow the penis to fill with blood during an erection. It’s not skeletal muscle that grows through conventional resistance training.
Stretching or squeezing penile tissue doesn’t replicate the biological processes responsible for skeletal muscle growth. Repeatedly applying more pressure doesn’t mean you’ll get better results.
What Are the Risks of Jelqing?
One of the biggest concerns with jelqing is the potential for tissue injury. The penis contains sensitive nerves, blood vessels, connective tissue, and structures involved in erectile function and sensation.
Repeated forceful squeezing or stretching may cause:
Pain, bruising, or swelling.
Skin irritation and soft tissue injury.
Nerve irritation, altered sensation, or numbness.
Blood vessel injury.
Scarring that may contribute to penile curvature or other complications.
Some people report burning, unusual sensitivity, or changes in how their penis feels after aggressive manual techniques. These symptoms shouldn’t be ignored.
Penile injury and scarring can be associated with Peyronie’s disease, a condition involving fibrous scar tissue that can cause penile curvature, pain, or changes in length. Jelqing isn’t established as a direct cause of Peyronie’s disease, but repeated penile trauma is a reason to take forceful enlargement techniques seriously.
If you experience persistent pain, numbness, new curvature, or changes in erectile function after jelqing, stop the practice and seek medical evaluation.
2. Penis Pumps: Temporary Fullness vs. Permanent Enlargement
Penis pumps, also called vacuum erection devices, use negative pressure to draw blood into the penis. They’re widely marketed online, and some products claim they can permanently increase penile length or girth.
But there’s an important difference between temporarily increasing blood flow and permanently changing penile size.
Do Penis Pumps Permanently Increase Penis Size?
For men seeking cosmetic enlargement, the available evidence doesn’t establish that penis pumps reliably produce permanent increases in length or girth.
A pump can temporarily increase penile fullness by drawing blood into the erectile tissue. That temporary effect isn’t the same as permanent tissue growth.
However, penis pumps do have beneficial medical uses.
When Can a Penis Pump Be Helpful?
Vacuum erection devices can help some men achieve and maintain erections, particularly when erectile dysfunction makes it difficult to get or keep an erection.
They’re also used in penile rehabilitation following prostate cancer surgery or treatment. Some men experience changes in erectile function and penile length after a prostatectomy, and vacuum devices may be incorporated into a rehabilitation plan to support erectile function and penile tissue health.
Depending on the individual situation, a vacuum device may also be considered as part of care for Peyronie’s disease.
The goal in these settings is different from cosmetic enlargement. Treatment may focus on supporting erectile function, maintaining tissue health, or addressing changes associated with surgery or a medical condition.
What Are the Risks of Penis Pumps?
Penis pumps can cause problems when they’re used incorrectly, with excessive vacuum pressure, or for longer than recommended.
Potential risks include:
Bruising and swelling.
Pain or skin irritation.
Numbness or altered sensation.
Blood vessel or soft tissue injury.
Discomfort associated with excessive pressure.
Using more pressure doesn’t necessarily improve results. If you’re considering a vacuum erection device for erectile dysfunction or rehabilitation, talk with a qualified healthcare professional about appropriate use, especially if you’ve had surgery or have an underlying medical condition. 3. Penile Traction Devices: What Does the Research Say?
Penile traction devices are designed to apply a sustained stretching force to the penis. Depending on the device, the base anchors around the pubic area while another attachment holds the penis near the head.
Some devices use rods to create traction, while others use different attachment systems.
Unlike jelqing, penile traction has been studied in clinical settings, particularly for men with Peyronie’s disease and men experiencing penile shortening after certain medical procedures.
Still, the evidence needs careful interpretation.
Can Penile Traction Increase Penis Length?
Research suggests that penile traction may help some men improve penile length in specific clinical situations. The amount of improvement varies depending on the condition being treated, the device, the treatment protocol, and the individual.
For men with Peyronie’s disease, traction therapy may help improve penile curvature and preserve or regain some length. Some studies have reported improvements in curvature, although results aren’t guaranteed and vary between studies.
Traction devices have also been investigated for men experiencing penile shortening after prostate surgery and for men seeking cosmetic length enhancement.
In healthy men without an underlying condition, however, the evidence is more limited. Some studies report modest increases in stretched penile length after several months of consistent use, but these findings don’t establish that every user will experience meaningful or lasting changes.
It’s also important to distinguish between stretched penile length and erect penile length. These measurements aren’t identical, and an improvement in one doesn’t automatically mean an equivalent improvement in the other.
Evidence for increasing penile girth with traction devices is limited.
Why Is the Evidence Difficult to Interpret?
Research on penile traction devices varies considerably. Studies may use different devices, treatment schedules, measurement methods, and patient populations.
Some studies also combine traction with other treatments, making it harder to determine how much improvement comes from the device itself.
As a result, it’s difficult to establish one standard protocol or predict exactly how much length an individual might gain.
Be cautious of marketing claims that promise guaranteed results or suggest that more traction and longer wear times will produce better outcomes.
What Are the Risks of Penile Traction?
Penile traction devices can cause side effects, particularly when they’re worn incorrectly, adjusted too tightly, or used too aggressively.
Potential problems include:
Skin irritation and soreness.
Bruising or swelling.
Pain or discomfort during use.
Numbness or reduced sensation around the head of the penis.
Skin injury from excessive pressure or prolonged wear.
If you experience pain, persistent numbness, skin damage, or worsening curvature, stop using the device and seek medical advice.
A healthcare professional familiar with penile health can help determine whether traction is appropriate for your situation and how to approach treatment safely.
Which Penis Enlargement Method Is Best?
The answer depends on your goal.
If you’re looking for cosmetic enlargement, none of these methods offers a guaranteed way to increase penis size safely and permanently.
Jelqing lacks reliable evidence of benefit and carries a risk of injury. Penis pumps can support erections and have medical uses, but they’re not proven to permanently enlarge a healthy penis. Penile traction devices have some evidence supporting their use for specific conditions, including Peyronie’s disease and certain cases of penile shortening, but results vary.
A treatment that helps with a medical condition isn’t necessarily an effective cosmetic enlargement method.
Before trying a device or technique, consider speaking with a urologist or another qualified healthcare professional who can help you understand the evidence, risks, and options relevant to your needs.
Your Penis Size Doesn’t Define Your Worth
I also want to acknowledge something that often gets lost in conversations about penis enlargement.
Concerns about penis size can be deeply personal. They can affect body image, sexual confidence, intimacy, and the ability to feel comfortable during sexual experiences.
It’s understandable to want to feel more confident in your body. But the constant pressure to change your appearance or meet unrealistic expectations can make it harder to enjoy intimacy and connection.
Your worth isn’t measured by penis size, shape, or performance.
Sexual confidence isn’t about physical measurements. It’s also about understanding your body, communicating with your partner, feeling comfortable with your sexuality, and knowing that pleasure and intimacy don’t depend on meeting a perceived physical standard or expectation.
If concerns about penis size are causing significant distress, talking with a healthcare professional or qualified sex therapist may help you explore those concerns without judgment.
You deserve accurate information, respectful care, and the opportunity to experience pleasure and connection in a way that feels right for you.
